Ceremony Thursday for nine fallen Charleston firefighters

Workers set up a tent at the memorial for last year’s service.

The annual remembrance ceremony for the nine Charleston firefighters who died in the Sofa Super Store fire is set for Thursday night.

The ceremony starts at 7 p.m. at the site of the former store at 1807 Savannah Highway. A memorial now marks the site.

The ceremony will include a lineup of department personnel, the reading of the nine names, ringing of the bell and bagpipes.

The men died in a fire that swept through the store June 18, 2007. The tragedy led to sweeping changes within the department.

Parking near the site is limited, so those attending may have to park elsewhere.

Charleston firefighters will start a watch at the flagpole at midnight and continue for 24 hours Thursday.

Visitors are welcome throughout the vigil.
