EDISTO BEACH — A handful of rising 8th graders built an 18-feet long, wooden rowboat and launched it today into the Atlantic Ocean.

They had a blast.

The boat is a pirogue, a flat-bottomed boat traditionally used in the Louisiana bayou.

The unusual project was the work of five Baptist High Middle School/High School students from Hollywood and Edisto Island, the brainchild of the Kit Fox, Communities in School student support specialist.
