Car windows busted out, purses stolen at AME church in Awendaw

Three vehicles were vandalized at Mt Nebo AME Church in Awendaw on Thursday, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded just after 6:45 p.m. to the place of worship, located at 5600 N Highway 17. Maj. Eric Watson said windows were busted out of the vehicles and purses and other personal items were taken.

No injuries were reported, although there were people inside the church when the vandalism occurred, Watson said.

He added that there was no current link to the recent vandalism to churches with black congregations on James Island, but that the incident remained under investigation. There were at least nine bullet holes discovered Thursday morning at James Island United Congregational Church at 1890 Central Park Road, and four bullet holes discovered Wednesday morning at Bethel AME Church at 1827 Central Park Road.
