COLUMBIA — Authorities say a Greenville businessman won’t face charges for shooting another man to death on his property.
Prosecutor Walt Wilkins said at a news conference Tuesday that Allen Stephenson was justified in the shooting early on March 19.
Stephenson is the founder of clothing company Southern Tide. Authorities say 32-year-old Matthew Whitman was shot and killed on Stephenson’s expansive property about 6 miles north of Greenville.
Stephenson reported someone was trespassing at his home and fired two warning shots. After the man pulled out a hunting knife, Wilkins says Stephenson shot him in the arm, chest and face.
Wilkins says Stephenson was legally standing his ground on his own property and is immune from prosecution. In a statement, Whitman’s relatives say they are disappointed in the decision.
