A burning van on Interstate 26 got a lot of attention from motorists Monday.

A lot of people snapped pictures of it around 2 p.m. along the westbound lanes near the Remount Road exit.

Here’s what happened, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Robert Thomas, 54, of Moncks Corner was pulling a trailer behind a 2000 Chevy pickup when the trailer came loose and the safety chains failed. The trailer hit a 2012 Toyota SUV and then the concrete median before swerving back across the interstate.

The driver of a 2002 van swerved to miss the trailer. The van overturned and caught on fire. The driver was able to get out on his own, and no injuries were reported. The van was destroyed.

Thomas was cited with a towing violation.
