A 16-year-old boy has drowned while swimming in a water-filled pit in rural Colleton County.
The boy, whose identity has not been released, was in the water with friends at the Twin Oaks Lane swimming hole when he ran into trouble and slipped underwater shortly before 6 p.m., Colleton County Fire and Rescue Director Barry McRoy said.
Unable to find him, the boy’s friends ran to a nearby house and called for help. Rescue crews and divers searched the pond, which is about 8 feet deep, McRoy said. They found the boy, face-down on the bottom, at 6:38 p.m., he said.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body has been turned over to the coroner, McRoy said.
The pit is a popular area spot for people to swim, McRoy said.
