Boy, 7, charged with carrying BB gun on school bus near Hollywood

PROVIDED Deputies say a boy, 7, who attends Minnie Hughes Elementary School near Hollywood, brought this BB gun aboard a bus Thursday.

A 7-year-old student faces juvenile charges after carrying a BB gun onto a school bus Thursday morning near Hollywood, according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded about 8 a.m. to Minnie Hughes Elementary School on Willtown Road, sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson said, for a report that a student had a BB gun on a bus.

They learned that an older student had taken the gun away from the 7-year-old boy and given it to the bus driver.

A photograph released by the Sheriff's Office showed the gun that looks similar to a 1911-style semiautomatic pistol. It's black with a wood-color grip.

The student was charged through a custodial promise with carrying a weapon on school property and interfering with a school, Watson said.

"It is an informal type of arrest as it relates to juveniles," Watson said. "The parent is required to bring the child to family court by agreeing to the custodial promise."

The boy was released to his legal guardian after the ordeal, Watson added.
