Bomb squad removes retired chemist’s stash from North Charleston house

Chemicals that a retired chemist had stored for years in his garage were removed by the Charleston County bomb squad Tuesday afternoon, sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson said.

The chemicals were taken from 8039 Nova Court, which is off Northside Drive between Palmetto Commerce Parkway and Interstate 26.

A citizen became concerned after seeing the stash and notified the Department of Health and Environmental Control, DHEC spokeswoman Cassandra Harris said. DHEC agents found containers of urea, glycerol, glycerine, zinc metal dust and copper metal dust. The bomb squad was called in “out of an abundance of caution,” Harris said.

The North Charleston Police Department assisted.

The situation didn’t call for any criminal charges, Watson said.
