Officers found a dead body Saturday in a marshy area of North Charleston, according to a police spokesman.

The North Charleston Police Department was called around 3 p.m. after a passerby noticed an unresponsive man lying in the marsh off Quitman Street, agency spokesman Spencer Pryor said Sunday.

The watery area in the Chicora community is about a half-mile west of the Cooper River, but it’s not open to any large swath of water.

The officers later determined that the man was dead.

Pryor did not say whether foul play was suspected. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office did not immediately release the man’s name or his cause of death.

Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay said around 2:30 p.m. Sunday that the man’s family had not been notified of his death.
