The body found Tuesday morning in the Ashley River has been identified.

He was Hercules Gaines, 64, of the West Ashley area, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay said.

The body was recovered sometime before 10:30 a.m. near the bridge on Cosgrove Avenue in North Charleston. The World War II Memorial Bridge goes over the Ashley River between West Ashley and North Charleston.
