Bikefest events to end earlier each night this year

People and motorcycles were filling the streets in Atlantic Beach during the annual Memorial Day Bikefest in 2014.

ATLANTIC BEACH, S.C. — The Atlantic Beach Town Council has agreed to end Bikefest events earlier this year as neighboring communities put plans in place to control crowds during the Memorial Day weekend event.

Local media outlets report Atlantic Beach Council members agreed Monday that vendors will have to close their booths at 2 a.m., an hour earlier than in the past.

Mayor Jake Evans says the town wanted to help other areas of the Grand Strand during the motorcycle festival. Other communities have asked the town to end Bikefest, but the town will continue to stage it.

Myrtle Beach and other neighboring communities have been developing a plan to control crowds after violence during the weekend last year left three dead.

Part of the plan is a 23-mile one-way loop to control traffic.
