A bicylist was taken to a hospital tonight after a sport-utility vehicle struck the bicycle as it was crossing a busy street, Charleston police said.

The collision took place about 7 p.m. near the intersection of Old Towne Road and Carriage Lane in West Ashley, police spokesman Charles Francis said.

An SUV traveling north struck the bicyclist, who was trying to cross Old Towne Road, Francis said. The bicyclist was taken to Medical University Hospital. Francis did not identify the cyclist.

Investigators determined the driver of the SUV did not contribute to the collision, Francis said.
