The bicyclist who died Thursday after a crash on Folly Road was facing felony drunk driving charges in connection with another wreck that killed a man just down the street.

Matthew Reid Fisher, 31, was riding his bicycle at 4:45 p.m. Thursday when he sideswiped a sport utility vehicle traveling in the same direction on Folly Road, Charleston County Sheriff’s Maj. Jim Brady said.

Fisher lost control and was stuck by a second vehicle. The accident happened near 2323 Folly Road, Brady said.

Fisher was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. Thursday from blunt force trauma injuries he received in the James Island crash, Charleston County Chief Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal said. He died at Medical University Hospital, she said.

The crash occurred just a couple of miles down the road from the spot where Fisher was accused of killing a man in a drunk driving accident in October, authorities said.

Beau James Froehlich, 25, of James Island, died as a result of broken bones and a massive head injury after Fisher’s vehicle struck him as he was walking outside the Skinful Halloween party on Oct. 23, authorities said.

Police charged Fisher with second-degree felony DUI. He was released from the Charleston County jail on $25,000 bail and was still awaiting trial when he was killed Thursday.
