Berkeley voters to pick sheriff Tuesday

Berkeley County voters will go to the polls Tuesday to choose a new sheriff.

The special election will fill the seat left vacant when longtime Sheriff Wayne Dewitt stepped down in February in the wake of his Dec. 28 arrest for drunken driving.

Republican Duane Lewis faces Democrat Anthony Smalls in the election.

In addition, write-in campaigns have been mounted by Derrick Burbage, MC Bellew and Brian Adams, who lost to Lewis in a Republican runoff.
