State law enforcement agents are investigating after a Berkeley County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a woman alleged to have pointed a firearm at deputies.

The woman’s identity has not been released. She died at 8:47 p.m. Thursday at Trident Hospital, according to Berkeley County spokesman Michael Mule.

Deputies responded at 7:25 p.m. to Whisper Way in Saint James Estates in unincorperated Goose Creek after receiving reports of an active shooter, Mule said.

When they arrived, a woman was “randomly discharging her firearm,” he said. Deputies used “less-lethal” force and that’s when she pointed her firearm at them, according to Mule.

One of the deputies shot the woman “to remove the threat,” and she was taken to the hospital, where she later died, he said.

Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis contacted the State Law Enforcement Division and they are investigating the shooting. No other information has been released.
