Berkeley County launching Text-to-911 Thursday

Berkeley County government will launch its Text-to-911 service Thursday, allowing people to text message 911 through their cellphones when they are in the county.

While this new service is available, Emergency Preparedness Director Tom Smith stressed the proven effectiveness of calling 911.

“Call 911 if you can; text if you can’t call,” Smith said. “We are excited to offer the text service, but we also want residents to know that calling 911 continues to be the best and fastest way to reach emergency personnel.”
