Berkeley County deputy shoots himself in the hand

A veteran Berkeley County deputy shot himself in the hand while inspecting his weapon this week.

Deputy L.T. Boyd was inspecting his duty weapon around 2:15 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Moss Grove swimming pool off Highway 52 in Moncks Corner when it discharged and shot him in the hand, Chief Deputy Mike Cochran said.

Boyd was in uniform at the time, and nobody else was around.

Boyd started to drive himself to a hospital but then returned to the scene to call EMS, Cochran said.

Boyd has been with the Sheriff’s office for 19 years and has received more than 1,200 hours of training, Cochran said.

The Professional Standards Unit is reviewing the incident, as is standard practice.
