Beaufort County voters to weigh land preservation

BEAUFORT, S.C. - For a fourth time since the late 1990s, voters in Beaufort County will consider whether to put money aside for rural land preservation.

The Beaufort Gazette reports that county council agreed Monday night to put a referendum on the November ballot to raise another $20 million for rural land preservation. Over the years voters have approved three previous referendums that raised $110 million to preserve rural landscapes.

There has been a disagreement on council as to how much longer the program needs to continue. Some members say it has met its goals while others favored one more round of funding to protect rural land.
