BEAUFORT, S.C. — Teachers and school staff in the South Carolina county with the highest cost of living are getting a $1,000 cost-of-living pay supplement next school year.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that the Beaufort County School District’s $203 million budget was approved Monday by Beaufort County Council.
The county’s 12 percent teacher turnover rate is among the highest in South Carolina. About one in ten of the county’s teachers are left their jobs at the end of this school year.
Officials say it’s tough for teachers, especially those just starting out, to afford to live in the county.
The newspaper reports the pay supplement will not mean a tax increase for taxpayers.
