ISLE OF PALMS — The City Council Public Safety Committee on Wednesday discussed whether to allow residents to keep backyard chickens but took no action.

“At this point, I don’t think it’s necessary to change any of our regulations,” said Committee Chairman Marty Bettelli.

Current rules ban the keeping of chickens, ducks, geese and pigeons.

Committee member Barbara Bergwerf indicated she was in favor of allowing people to have chickens. “It just seems so innocent,” she said.

Mayor Dick Cronin quipped that if chickens were allowed, pigs would follow so residents could have ham with their fresh eggs.

Sullivan’s Island and Mount Pleasant allow residents to have chickens.
