GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Authorities say a newly elected Georgetown city councilman has been arrested and charged with a sex crime involving a minor.

Local media outlets report that police said 43-year-old Sheldon Amonda Butts is charged with third-degree attempted criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Butts surrendered to officers at the Georgetown County Detention Center on Nov. 7. It was not clear whether he has an attorney.

Police said the charge came after a four-week investigation.

Butts won a seat on the city council Nov. 3.

Georgetown County school spokesman Ray White says Butts had been working as an instructional assistant at Georgetown High School since August and was placed on administrative leave following his arrest.
