Authorities have identified a body found near a Walmart store in West Ashley on Wednesday as a transient man.

David Thompson, 46, of no certain address, died from a gunshot wound to the head, Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kimberly Rhoton said. The wound appears to have been self-inflicted, she said.

A handgun was recovered with the body in the area off West Ashley Circle and Bees Ferry Road, Charleston police have said.

The man’s body was discovered about 5 p.m. Wednesday by someone searching the woods for turtles, officers reported.Officials initially said they couldn’t tell the sex of the body because it was badly decomposed.

Rhoton said it was unclear when Thompson died or how long his body had been in the woods.

The forest is just off Bees Ferry Road and adjacent to a parking lot at the Walmart Supercenter. Homeless people often were seen at the location, according to those who frequent the store.
