A Georgia man died today when the 18-wheel tractor-trailer rig he was driving left Interstate 26 and collided with trees in the median, authorities said.

Clyde Bennett, 52 of Augusta, Ga., was headed east on the interstate, between Summerville and Jedburg, when the truck left the left side of the highway and struck several trees in the median.

Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene, near mile marker 198, by Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury. The death was ruled incidental, with the cause being head and body trauma. Bennett was wearing his seat belt, Salisbury said.

The incident is being investigated by the coroner’s office, the S.C. Highway Patrol and the State Transport Police, he said.

The incident, combined with another one in the westbound lanes in North Charleston, confounded I-26 traffic well into the night.
