A Charleston man has been arrested after a Johns Island convenience store was held up at gunpoint last week.

The Kangaroo gas station at 1786 Main Road was robbed about 11 p.m. May 7. A clerk told Charleston police officers he was outside when a man walked up behind him, placed a silver pistol at his head and forced him back into the store. The gunman took money out the cash register and 10 packs of Newport cigarettes, according to the incident report.

Police released images from the store’s camera the day after the robbery.

Byron Rivers, 20, of Yost Lane was charged Wednesday with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, police spokesman Charles Francis said. Rivers was being held in the Charleston County jail on $480,000 total bail.
