Howard Alston, math teacher at Woodland High School, was named Dorchester District 4 Teacher of the Year.

"I have been teaching now for 12 years and my dream is the same as when I started, a desire to inspire," he said. "As I look at the students I teach today, I often reflect back on my life at their age. My parents and several of my former teachers were important factors that influenced me to become a teacher."

Alston is a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who spent 22 years in the military. He earned his teaching credentials through the Troops to Teachers program.

Alston serves as the lead teacher for the WHS Freshman Academy, is a mentor and coordinates the monthly mentor/mentee meetings.
