All road crossings cleared from North Charleston train derailment

Three empty hopper cars went off the train tracks Thursday in North Charleston.

About 1:50 p.m., a CSX train derailed inside Bennett Rail Yard, according to spokesperson Kristin Seay.

The train was traveling from Florence to Hamlet, N.C., and had two locomotives and 121 total cars carrying mixed freight. No injuries were reported and no product was lost, Seay said. Local authorities and CSX Police responded to the scene.

As of 3:15 p.m., the derailed cars were disconnected from the remaining rail cars and the train was moved from the area, making all road crossings clear.

The accident temporarily blocked the crossings at Montague at Railroad, South Rhett at Spruill, Spruill at Bexley and South Rhett at Bexley, North Charleston police reported. Traffic was flowing around 3 p.m. at the intersections of South Rhett and Bexley, and at Spruill and Bexley, police said.

The Charleston County School District said some buses may experience slight delays stemming from the derailment if they need to be rerouted. It may include bus routes in other areas around the county.
