The 15-year-old who was fatally shot outside a North Charleston restaurant Friday was trying to break up a fight during a drug deal, according to an affidavit released Wednesday.
Derrick Roper of Charleston was shot shortly before 6:30 p.m. Friday outside the Olive Garden at Northwoods Mall.
Marijuana was scattered around the vehicle, and a man who fled the scene was arrested with more than $2,000 in cash, two digital scales, about 1.2 ounces of marijuana and a pill bottle containing Xanax, according to North Charleston police.
The affidavit also identifies who police said fired the fatal shot.
Here’s what happened, according to the affidavit:
Calvin Dennis Benekin Jr., 22, of Wolverine Drive in North Charleston was doing a drug deal in the parking lot when he and another man started fighting. Roper tried to separate them, and Benekin shot Roper in the left shoulder, severing arteries that caused him to bleed to death.
Benekin jumped into a burgundy Saturn Ion driven by Jamal S. Drayton, 22, of Pinewood Drive in Summerville.
Benekin and Drayton are charged with murder.
Roper’s brother, Deshone Bernard Rivers, 19, of Richmond Street in Charleston called for help, according to 911 recordings released by the county. Police found Roper bleeding heavily in the back seat of a tan Nissan Murano.
Rivers was charged with conspiracy to violate narcotics laws. Brittney Wall, 23, of Woodstock Avenue in North Charleston was arrested on the same charge.
Police said they caught Tyler Linwood White, 20, of Bonaparte Drive in North Charleston running from the scene with the marijuana, cash and scales. He was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
Witnesses gave police a description of the Saturn, including the license plate number. Police put out an alert that Benekin and Drayton were both wanted.
Benekin was arrested Saturday and remains in the Charleston County jail. Drayton turned himself in Tuesday. He was denied bail Wednesday morning and taken back to his cell.
