The road construction project continued on Highway 78 above Ridgeville in Dorchester County on Monday. All construction on state highways ceased Friday and won't resume until Tuesday.

COLUMBIA — South Carolina is giving holiday weekend travelers a gift — they aren't allowing construction workers to close any lanes on the state's interstates until Tuesday morning.

The state wants to keep all lanes open as they expect some of the heaviest traffic in months over the Memorial Day holiday weekend since stay at home orders have been lifted across the South, officials said.

The moratorium on lane closures started Friday morning and goes through 6 a.m. Tuesday, the state Department of Transportation said.

The agency is also taking steps to keep travelers who need a break safe.

Workers will clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at all rest areas every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. over the holiday weekend, the DOT said.
