Rural Health Services, which is headquartered in Aiken, has received $100,000 in grant funding, according to a recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
In all, awards totaling $11 million were given to 120 school-based health centers across the country.
The Health Resources and Services Administration’s 2019 School-Based Health Center Capital Program provided the funding for the grants.
Rural Health Services was the only recipient in South Carolina.
“I am pleased that Rural Health Services is the recipient of this grant as it supports our mission to provide accessible, quality health care to all populations, regardless of their economic status,” said Rural Health Services CEO Carolyn Emanuel-McClain.
Rural Health Services plans to use its $100,000 in grant funding to purchase a customized van and medical equipment that will support the delivery of telehealth services to address mental health, substance abuse and childhood obesity.
Rural Health Services works with the Aiken County Public School District and the Edgefield County School District to improve the health of their students.
“We are committed to collaborations with community partners and mission alignment that aims to help children realize their maximum potential,” said Dr. Shawn Foster, chief officer of operations and student services for the Aiken County Public School District. “Aiken County Public Schools is excited to continue and expand our partnership with Rural Health Services through this grant that will allow students to receive specialized, professional health care designed to improve health and wellness and remove barriers to their success.”
School-based health centers are operated as a partnership between the school and a sponsoring facility such as a community health center. The specific services provided by school-based health centers vary based on community needs and resources as determined through collaborations between the community, school district and health care providers.
