Police: 1 suspect in killing of 'Lizard Man' eyewitness in custody, one sought

SUMTER -- South Carolina police have a suspect in custody and are looking for another in connection with last week's shooting death of the man who became famous in 1988 as the first one to report a sighting of the legendary "Lizard Man." The Sumter Item reported Tuesday that 19-year-old Lakiem Davar Butler turned himself in to Sumter City-County Law Enforcement officials in connection with Wednesday's shooting death of 37-year-old Christopher Davis. Officials said Davis was shot to death in his home in an apparent drug-related incident. Another suspect, 22-year-old Anogory Santrell Slater, also was charged with murder but remains at large, the sheriff's office said. The sheriff's office said a narcotics officer recovered 10 grams of marijuana and two scales from the kitchen of the home. Davis became an international celebrity at the age of 16 when he reported the first sighting of the legendary "Lizard Man," a big-eyed swamp creature, but authorities never figured out what prompted the reports. Media coverage at the time prompted a swell of attention, with local businesses selling "Lizard Man" T-shirts and the chamber of commerce backing the publicity as good for the community.
