Johnson Motor Company set to be sold to Andy Jones and family

A deal is nearing completion on the sale of Johnson Motor Company of South Carolina, a Buick and GMC dealership in Graniteville.

Andy Jones told the Aiken Standard recently that he and his family are purchasing the business.

He said the transaction is scheduled to be finalized May 31.

Johnson Motor Company will become part of the Gerald Jones Auto Group.

The dealerships already operating under that umbrella are Gerald Jones Volkswagen Audi, Gerald Jones Mazda, Gerald Jones Honda, Gerald Jones Volvo Subaru and Gerald Jones Ford Lincoln.

They are located in Georgia in Augusta and Martinez.

“We want to expand, and Aiken is such a good market,” said Andy Jones, who lives in North Augusta. “Aiken County is growing, and we’ve got a lot of friends and customers there. We’re familiar with the area. We shop in Aiken, and we eat in Aiken. It was just kind of the next (logical) progression.”

Jones has bought some new equipment for Johnson Motor Co. and plans to add 100 used cars to its inventory.

“We are going to use it as a service center not only for Buick and GMC, but also for the other cars that we sell,” Jones said. “We won’t be able to do the warranty work (for those other cars), but we will be able to change oil, rotate tires and those kinds of things. It will be more convenient for our Aiken customers.”

No major staff changes are planned at Johnson Motor Company.

“It should be a good thing for all the employees,” Jones said. “We’re letting them all keep their seniority. They’ll get vacations. They’ll get medical. They’ll get all the stuff they’re used to getting and some of ours will be better. We need the employees, and we’ll probably add a few more because I think we’ll get bigger. We’re real excited.”

Jones declined to disclose the purchase price for Johnson Motor Company, which is at 490 Jefferson Davis Highway.

Duncan Johnson Jr. of Johnson Motor Company did not respond to requests for comment prior to this story’s publication.
