A City of North Augusta garbage truck caught fire around 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Aiken County landfill in Graniteville.

An employee at the landfill said there was a loud boom and then she saw a large plume of black smoke coming from the truck.

The landfill closed temporarily while Graniteville firefighters made sure the area was safe.

Assistant City Administrator Rachelle Moody said the truck's tire caught on fire.

"We had a tire that caught on fire on a trailer while it was at the landfill, but it was able to be put out," Moody said.

The city confirmed there were no injuries.
