HILTON HEAD ISLAND — The South Carolina resort of Hilton Head Island is getting a new mayor for the first time in 15 years.

The November ballot will be crowded. The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported Thursday that seven candidates are seeking to replace Mayor Tom Peeples, who decided against running for re-election.

The executive director of the Beaufort County Board of Voter Registration and Elections, Scott Marshall, says it’s unusual in most places to have so many mayoral candidates. But Marshall says Hilton Head residents should be encouraged there are so many people interested in running.
