Police call Greenville man’s thrown punch attempted murder

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Greenville police say a punch that knocked a man unconscious may be an example of attempted murder.

Multiple media organizations reported the 29-year-old victim of the attack remained hospitalized in stable condition Friday, two days after the surprise punch. Greenville Police Officer Gilberto Franco said his injuries likely would have been fatal without medical attention.

Police released a photo Friday evening showing a group of people they want to interview about the attack.

Officers responded late Wednesday to the plaza outside a downtown performing arts center. Several witnesses said the attacker walked up to the victim and punched him in the side of the head and walked away, leaving the man unconscious on the ground.
