A moped rider was killed Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 78, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
At 8:40 a.m., deputies responded to the accident scene just west of Interstate 26, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The moped was involved in a collision with a car.
According to initial reports, the moped rider, while traveling east on U.S. 78, changed lanes and struck a vehicle in the rear, said Maj. Eric Watson, sheriff’s spokesman. The car was stopped in rush-hour traffic. The moped rider was not wearing helmet and died at the scene from his injuries, Watson said.
The accident remains under investigation. The Charleston County Coroner’s Office will release the identity.
