Man shot during home invasion on Johns Island

An intruder kicked in a door on Johns Island and shot a man early Saturday, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

The home invasion on Gibbs Road was reported around 1:10 a.m. John Lee Williams Jr., 47, of nearby Legareville Road was shot, according to an incident report released Monday. He was recovering at a hospital Monday, Maj. Eric Watson said.

The female resident said the intruder knocked at her door and windows and she didn’t respond, according to the incident report. Williams was inside the house and said he didn’t know the person outside.

The knocking got louder, and then the man outside kicked in the front door and came in brandishing a gun, the resident told deputies. She described him as black, with a beard, in his early to mid-20s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, wearing black shorts and a white crew-neck T-shirt.

Deputies reported finding glass on the front porch, the front door kicked in and a piece of the frame leaning against the living room couch.

The woman told deputies she ran to a back bedroom and hid in a closet behind the clothes. Williams was in a front bedroom. She said she could hear the intruder demanding, “Where’s the money?,” and Williams saying, “Please, don’t shoot.” Then she heard a gunshot.

Williams’ mother drove him to River Road and Maybank Highway, where EMS met them and took him to Medical University Hospital.
