A man was fatally shot in front of a church near a city recreation complex early Monday.
The shooting was reported at 2:05 a.m. on Kennedy Street near President Street, according to Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis. The victim has been identified only as an adult man.
Police moved a body from the sidewalk in front of Nichols Chapel AME Church, according to an early-morning television crew. The sidewalk was wet Monday morning where the scene had been cleaned. Pieces of police tape were at Kennedy and President streets.
The scene is across President Street from the Gadsden Green public housing complex, It’s about a block south of Harmon Field, a city athletic and playground complex near Burke High School.
This is the ninth homicide so far this year in Charleston and 38th in the tri-county area.
