Hilton Head moving on $16M redevelopment

HILTON HEAD ISLAND— After years of debate the Town of Hilton Head Island is moving forward on one of the most expensive municipal project in town history - a $16 million redevelopment of the Coligny area near Sea Pines Plantation.

The area is the posh resort’s most popular tourist destination and The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that town officials said Monday work is expected to begin later this year.

The plans call for developing a new public park and playground as well as a new building for the local children’s museum.

The work is expected to take just over a year to complete.

The town acquired the 15-acre tract about 20 years ago and there have been discussions ever since about how to use the land.
