Driver charged with DUI after Charleston police car sideswiped

A driver was charged with driving under the influence after sideswiping a Charleston police car Tuesday night.

Patrick Kalish, 36, of Charleston was heading south on Folly Road in a pickup truck around 8:45 p.m. when he sideswiped a Charleston police car heading north near the Wappoo Bridge, according to Highway Patrol Cpl. Matt Southern. Kalish got out of the truck and left the scene and was arrested at his house, Southern said. His address was not available.

Kalish had not been booked into the Charleston County jail as of Wednesday morning, according to the jail staff.

The officer was not hurt and is back on duty, police spokesman Charles Francis said. Neither the police nor the Highway Patrol had an estimate on how badly the patrol car was damaged.
