Several fundraisers for Charleston Olympic athlete Raven Saunders are on tap this week as the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro draw closer.

Saunders, a graduate of Burke High School and a sophomore at Mississippi, earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in the shot put. Her trip to Rio is paid for by the U.S. Olympic Committee, but members of her family must pay for their own trip to the Games.

On tap this week:

The Krispy Kreme store (1491 Savannah Highway) will donate $1 for every dozen doughnuts sold on Wednesday, and will reward other donations with a free doughnut. Raven’s mother, Clarissa Saunders, has worked for Krispy Kreme in Charleston for almost 20 years.

State Rep. Wendell Gilliard and Local 1422 of the International Longshoreman’s Association will hold a fundraiser from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the ILA Hall at 1142 Morrison Drive. The evening will feature music, dancing and several speakers.

Blue Sky Endurance of Mount Pleasant will hold a fundraiser on Thursday at its weekly group run. The run begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Blue Sky Endurance store at 725 Coleman Boulevard. Prizes will be raffled off, and the store will donate 10 percent of sales toward the Saunders’ fund.

As of Monday, a GoFundMe account had raised more than $15,000 to help pay for the Saunders’ family’s trip to Rio.
