Former Clemson, Walterboro football player Stephens dies at 51

Walterboro native Tony Stephens, a former all-ACC defensive lineman for Clemson, died Monday of pneumonia at age 51.

Stephens had been coping with a long-term respiratory problem.

He graduated from Walterboro High School and made his way into Danny Ford’s starting lineup for the 1986 and 1987 seasons.

As a senior in 1987, lining up next to Michael Dean Perry, Stephens made 61 tackles and helped Clemson to the No. 2 rushing defense ranking, earning all-conference honors.

Stephens was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the third round of the 1988 NFL Draft, though he did not appear in an NFL game.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
