3340 River Landing Road Historic-style brick house in wooded Johns Island neighborhood showcases host of attractions

This colonial-style house at 3340 River Landing Road on Johns Island is for sale for $620,000.

The Hilal couple four years ago bought a distinctive Johns Island brick house, designed in 1993 to resemble Monticello in Virginia.

They remodeled the home’s interior, replaced aged wallpaper with Charleston historic paint colors, revamped the kitchen and built a second-floor recreation room in what had been the middle of the attic.

The husband and wife stained the oak floors to darken them, spruced up the windows with trim and installed cast iron fixtures to maximize the home’s historic feel.

“We had planned on retiring here,” Shelby Hilal says of the 3,363-square-foot residence at 3340 River Landing Road.

“It’s private but not secluded,” she says.

Situations change, though, and the Hilals recently negotiated a value deal on a posh Lowcountry home east of the Cooper. Shelby Hilal, an associate with Carolina One Real Estate, is listing agent on their Johns Island home, which is on the market for $620,000. The three bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath Georgian-style house last sold in late 2012.

“We’ve had quite a lot of activity, out-of-towners coming in,” she says. Hilal says the property has been for sale less than 45 days since she took over as agent.

“It would be good for retirees or a second home,” the Realtor says. “There are a lot of people that have second homes or are retirees (in the River Landing neighborhood).”

The property showcases scores of features including a two-and-a-half-acre home site complete with ample lawn, woods, in-ground swimming pool with removable cover, outdoor fireplace built within the past four years, a wooden shed and dog pen. There’s also an attached two-car garage with enough space for a workshop. The garage also could be redesigned with a finished upstairs.

A well-landscaped backyard boasts roses, gardenias, camellias, fig trees and hydrangeas, Hilal says. In addition, the house borders a horse farm.

The removed River Landing community, close to Bohicket Road’s widening to four lanes into Betsy Kerrison Parkway, features dirt roads, large lots and a community dock.

Interior layout of 3340 River Landing Road includes a family room with fireplace, separate dining room, eat-in kitchen with island, laundry room, central air and electric heat, wood floors, walk-in closets and ceramic tile floors in the bathrooms.

In her listing, Hilal touts the idyllic nature of the Johns Island property.

“This Lowcountry estate offers beautiful moss-draped shadowing oaks on 2.5 acres that provide privacy within a short drive to Kiawah Island and Seabrook, both of which offer a variety of entertainment including live music and breathtaking sunsets from the Bohicket Marina,” Hilal says.

Enjoy Lowcountry living by catching crabs and fishing from the community boat landing and dock on Bohicket River, the Realtor says. “For entertaining family and friends this home has a stunning patio with a screened in-ground pool and wood burning fireplace,” she says. The custom home unveils “an abundance of character” showcasing crown molding, plantation shutters and nine- and 10-foot ceilings.

Tray ceilings distinguish the dining room and master bedroom, and “numerous windows allow for an abundance of natural light,” the Realtor says.

Hilal says the property benefits from a well-placed location in the country, while at the same time remaining close to beaches, shopping and Lowcountry attractions.

The River Landing neighborhood boasts 11 houses on multi-acre wooded lots, she says. There’s a community dock and boat landing. Homeowners association dues are $550 a year. She notes the Lowcountry estate stands three miles from Kiawah Island resort, Seabrook Island and Bohicket Marina. “Downtown Charleston is less than a 30-minute drive,” she says.

Hilal will host an open house 1-to-4 p.m. Sunday at 3340 River Landing Road.

The house stands about a mile from Bohicket Road. Traveling southwest, cross the Ashley River Bridge and bear left onto Folly Road. Go over the Wappoo Bridge and turn right to Maybank Highway. Continue on Maybank to Johns Island, crossing River Road. At the next traffic light, make a left on Bohicket Road. Continue on Bohicket for about eight miles. Turn right on River Landing Road. Ahead on the right is 3340 River Landing Road.
