Carolina One to require CTAR membership

A real estate group that boasts three in every 10 home transactions in metro Charleston plans to require its agents to be members of Charleston Trident Association of Realtors.

Starting Sept. 1, Carolina One Real Estate Services will make membership in the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors a condition of company affiliation.

The company says more than 90 percent of Carolina One’s agents are members of CTAR, the SC Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.

“There’s a difference between a Realtor and a person who merely holds a real estate license,” according to Dave Sansom, Carolina One chief financial and chief operating officer.

“As metro Charleston’s real estate market leader, we need to take the lead in demonstrating this to the public,” he says. “The time has come to raise the bar and go all in.”

Sansom adds that CTAR membership stands consistent with Carolina One’s core values and “passes the test of being good for the consumer, the agent and the company.”

Association benefits include agents operating at higher standards by adhering to the Realtor Code of Ethics and the Professional Standards Committee.

Also, the group protects private property rights through the Realtors Political Action Committee and “does an excellent job of keeping Realtors informed on issues that impact the industry both locally and nationally,” Carolina One Real Estate notes.

Members also can legally advertise using the Realtor brand and logo, the company says.

According to association executive director Wil Riley, “The preamble of the Realtors Code of Ethics states, ‘Realtors are zealous to maintain and improve the standards of their calling and share with their fellow Realtors a common responsibility for (the real estate profession’s) integrity and honor.’” Riley says the association feels “thrilled to have Carolina One Real Estate mandate their associates be Realtor members.”

Last year, Carolina One Real Estate ranked as the 52nd largest Realtor in the U.S. by properties sold and the 58th largest Realtor by volume with $2.6 billion in sales, 8,900 transactions and 1,100 independent contractors and staff.
