Campbell criticizes Brown

Carroll Campbell says in a release today that he is thinking about running against U.S. Rep. Henry Brown for his 1st Congressional seat that serves Charleston and the Lowcountry. Both men are Republicans.

Campbell says Brown's decision to hold a town hall meeting Sept. 3 to discuss health care - after our columnist Brian Hicks wrote earlier this month that the Lowcountry deserves a forum for people to talk about an issue that will affect all of our lives - is evidence of why the 1st Congressional District needs new representation in Washington, D.C.

Campbell (son of the late governor) discloses that he is considering running against Brown.

"For weeks the people of the first Congressional district have been calling on their Congressman to hold a town hall on the potentially damaging, wasteful health care proposals before Congress," Campbell said.

"... Now weeks later - after newspaper stories and others joined in the concern over his failure to do his job - he has reversed course. This is a pattern for Mr. Brown and it proves that the people of the District can do better."

Brown's office sent out an e-mail Wednesday afternoon to let the public know that he will be host a town hall at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Charleston Area Convention Center in Exhibit Hall A.

Brown invites all constituents to meet, discuss the current debate on health care and voice their concerns on any other issues important to South Carolinians, according to the e-mail.

On Aug. 19, Brown's office also provided details about his co-sponsorship Empowering Patients First Act (H.R. 3400).

“The time has come for balanced, common sense health care reform that will guarantee that Americans receive quality care while protecting the sacred doctor-patient relationship. I strongly believe that the Empowering Patients First Act, a Republican alternative to the Democrat’s government-run health care plan, will do just this.

"The bill, created by the Republican Study Committee, is a budget neutral proposal based on the fundamental principle that personal medical decisions should be made by patients and their doctors, not unaccountable bureaucrats in Washington.

"No matter the challenges facing the country, my Republican colleagues and I are dedicated to offering real solutions. We look forward to Democrats joining us to work towards positive, patient-centered health care reform in the coming months. The American people demand and deserve it.”

Brown pitches these points as highlights of the bill:

• Makes health care affordable for everyone. • Allows you to keep your current health insurance. • Covers pre-existing conditions. • Grants greater choice and portability. • Reimburses physicians to ensure continuity of care. • Includes tort reform. • Excludes taxpayer funded abortion. • Pays for itself.

Perfect timing - a town hall meeting that coincides with the Gamecocks football season opener, insures at least several thousand constituents will not be there to bother Henry.

These town hall meetings have no real merit because there is no true discussion. Why have a meeting if we already know Brown will march in lockstep with the GOP and he'll vote no? We need a replacement, but it's ain't Mr.Campbell who is using his name to get ahead. We have plenty of talent here without importing from the upstate. (And I'm from the Upstate myself.) We don't need people moving here telling us how to do things.

Kerry,,,I agree, that was a precise calculated decision to hold that town hall meeting on a day of the USC football opener. But, any way, I think Mr. Brown's pointer's listed above are straight out of a town hall meeting hosted by Dems, that I attended in the Maryland area, when I was TDY. Wow!!!! what a similarity..

Campbell is just a continuation of Upstate haters of the Low Country. His father did not even try to hide it. Campbell may LIVE in the Low Country but he is not from here just like Sanfraud, Tom Davis, etc.

The republican health plan sounds just like the democrat health care plans only with out numbers or details. Tort reform is different but how effective will that be to reduce the cost of health care? California and Texas already have such legislation and there insurance costs continue to rise with the rest of the states. But I suppose it would do now harm to include that in the final health care reform legislation.

I hope I don't see any seniors on Medicare protesting government health care. They are on it. If they protest high government spending, they should know the money is being spent on them. No one on Social Security or who ever accepted unemployment benefits, or is uninsured and used an emergency room, or ever accepted food stamps, or if your parents or grandparents are in a nursing home paid for by Medicaid should be protesting the government is becoming suddenly becoming socialistic. You have been enjoying the benefits of the socialistic programs our govenment offers. It should be a small crowd of protestors if these people exclude themselves from protesting.
