No whining in the press box

After watching App State defeat The Citadel by 30-27 in overtime last Saturday, after watching All-American QB Armanti Edwards have another terrific day, after watching two team absolutely lay it on the line, here's what Rob Jenkins, sports editor of The Appalachian, chose to write about:

"I have never really seen a problem with cheering in the various press boxes I have been to. That was until last Saturday, when I was introduced to the media relations staff of The Citadel.

"The staffers who were in charge of keeping stats and identifying which players were involved in plays were the most unprofessional group of media relations people I have ever dealt with.

"They were blatantly cheering very audibly for the Bulldogs."

Now, being a sportswriter of a certain age, I have been in press boxes across the country, and can safely say that the Cid's staff is as professional as any. It's difficult to keep from reacting to great plays as they unfold on the field, for reporters and staff alike. I myself have done so, both for the "home" team and the opposition. This happens in press boxes everywhere -- even, believe it or not, in Boone. And I have heard those who are a bit too boisterous, including cadets who work in the press box during games, be admonished.

The incident I will never forget was covering a baseball game at a school which shall remain unnamed, and having the school president sit in the press box, loudly cheering for the home team, with the school's AD and SID sitting close by and saying nothing.

May I suggest to Mr. Jenkins that the real story is down there on the field, and not in the press box.

-- And is that really a picture of you with an "ASU #1" foam finger next to your column? Irony, anyone?

You know, when you can't have fun, just quit what you're doing. They absolutely should have been excited and who can sit there like a bump on a log if you truly love the game and the school? We're loud and proud at App. Seems like the sports editor was more worried about being pompous than enjoying the game. Sorry about that - and cheer on!
