Why should Gov. Sanford resign, is there really a good reason or is there some people looking for a witch hunt. No one knows for sure what goes on in the Sanford household. Don't be so quick to judge. Were you that quick to judge our former President Clinton or maybe Mr. Edwards. If anyone should have stepped down it should have been Clinton. Sweep before your own doorstep first. Maybe if you stand behind your Governor he'll stand up for you. Maybe he was right about the things he's been trying to do for this state lately.

I thought up to now Sanford had been a good Governor but of course he should resign. If he can't keep his oath to his own wife, how can we possible trust him to run this state? Your actions speak for who and what you are, he has shown with his actions that he is not someone the people should respect or trust enough to be the leader of this state.

It's not his personal actions that makes me feel that he should resign it's the regard he had for the state that he runs. How could he go away to another country at that and not leave anyone in charge. What would have happen if an emergency had arisen. When you are in charge you can't just up and leave and think there will be no consequences.

Hard call there. He left the country without transferring his office to someone else. For that he should resign. However, he only has a short time left, and his actions, although immoral, are not a judgement against his office. He has been a good govenor and will be hard to replace in that respect. But, for 7 days, he left his office in a state of unknown.

I have always support Mark Sanford. This, obviously is a tough time. My only concern (other than for his family) is when someone is under so much "personal" stress-that this CAN affect your decision making and thought process. Anyone who has gone through a painful breakup can testify how the stress of a relationship gone bad, can affect every area of your life. SC needs someone who can think clearly. Perfect example of bad decision making and not thinking clearly is demonstrated by him leaving for several days and not telling anyone his whereabouts. This is not normal behavior for any Governor.

Chicago_Thug (anonymous) says...

Yes, he should resign. He has lost the trust of those he was supposed to serve.

In addition, being retired military, what he did ticks me off. Adultry is a violation of the UCMJ. Mr Sanford, as a member of the military: USAR, 2002-present, violated, Article 134 - A Punitive Article of the UCMJ.

"Though not specifically mentioned in this chapter, all disorders and neglects to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces, all conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces, and crimes and offenses not capital, of which persons subject to this chapter may be guilty, shall be taken cognizance of by a general, special, or summary court-martial, according to the nature and degree of the offense, and shall be punished at the discretion of that court."

Elements.

(1) That the accused wrongfully had sexual intercourse with a certain person;

(2) That, at the time, the accused or the other person was married to someone else; and

(3) That, under the circumstances, the conduct of the accused was to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces or was of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces.

Explanation.

(1) Nature of offense. Adultery is clearly unacceptable conduct, and it reflects adversely on the service record of the military member.

I don't care what he does on his off time! I don't care where or when he goes off to clear his head. What I DO care about is who pays for it, and when he leaves, who is in charge. If we footed the bill for him to go and see "the other women", he needs to resign and spend some time in the un-employment lines with the folks who have lost their jobs because he did not do his. As for as transfer of power, may I remind you of Katrina. The federal government will not respond to a disaster unless asked for by the governer or his specified replacement. I live on an earthquake fault. If we had the big one,you could add another 24 to 48 hours response because this dirt bag was off having a great time and not answering his phone. Isn't Sanford the same Bible-thumping media prima-donna who justified his votes to impeach Clinton, (when Sanford was in Congress),citing "Moral Legitimacy"? Why shouldn't he be held to the same standards he tried to impose on another? Why are his supporters downplaying his failure..."Stupid for people to say he should resign"..or..."witch hunt"... This is not a "Party" thing. It is a culture of corruption which we allow. If it's our guy, it's O.K..we can look the other way... If it's the other guy we gotta hang him(her). We need to demand better of our elected officials, all officials, regardless of party. Period. Sanford's resignation is the only logical next step. It is required. Now.

I'm not sure that Gov. Sanford staying in office should be justified by not wanting Bauer. After all, Bauer was elected to the position by virtue of being Sanford's running mate. Yes, Bauer has acted the clown on several occasions, but I don't believe he could do any more damage than the damage already done. If nothing else, he'll probably behave himself with the example of Sanford before him.

Gov. Sanford should cut his losses and go work on his family relationships. Truly more is hurt than just his marriage. He has hurt his own family, Jenny's family, and his friends and colleagues, but most of all he has hurt his sons. He doesn't have time to be governor right now.

Most New Yorkers want Spitzer back over Patterson who stepped in upon Spitzer's resignation, and Spitzer certainly is able to run again for the same office in the future. But he did the right thing by stepping aside. He was elected, broke the public's trust, stepped aside, and is free to be elected again with these new issues a part of the public record. And If New Yorkers want him back, they will re-elect him. Thats the crucial difference in protecting the process of representing the people of New York, rather than protecting the people involved in the scandal. Will South Carolinians have the same brains and stones to do the right thing as New Yorkers did?

If you impeach the Governor, than impeach the Legislature as well. Haven't they been asleep at the wheel with the PEOPLE'S MONEY. Let me repeat that, "THE PEOPLE'S MONEY." The problems with the mistress are between him and his family and I'm sure he will pay for it. His wife has had plenty of time to think of the ways. You can't impeach him because of sex (Clinton mantra). As for the Legislature, they have run this state into the ground without the Governor's help. He should resign for the very reason he stated as his goal for the remainder of his time in office. The state needs a governor whose total focus is on working on the issues that will help the state pull out of the economic funk that it is in.

Of course, that will never happen. One, Mark won't resign. I don't believe he believes it is necessary and does not plan to quit. Two, the state legislature has no interest in working with ANY governor that is not a mouthpiece for their agenda anyway. Until the people of South Carolina elect leaders who actually put the state ahead of their own selfish interests, it won't matter WHO the governor is, the state will continue to atrophy.

Hmmm...how nice of the Post and Courier to spam my inbox with TWO emails with the links to Warren Peper's video. And how nice to only feature four people, all of whom think Sanford should resign. So much for fair and balanced journalism, huh? I've lost my respect for Peper, and will probably cancel my subscription to the Post & Courier.

As for Sanford, I don't condone his infidelity, but I do respect him for standing up to the Good Ol Boys in Columbia, and to Obama. He's always tried to do what's best for this state, and I admire his tenacity. I do NOT think he should resign, and still hope to see him run for President in 2012.

To all those who think he should resign because he didn't meet a personal Moral standard, think about this... Democrats do this sort of thing all the time. Their Party just shrugs, and they go along, business as usual. But the Republicans? They throw their own to the wolves. No one is without sin. Everyone makes mistakes. It's not our place to judge. Leave that God. If the Republicans don't learn to stand behind their most talented, even when they falter, there will be no Republicans left to challenge the Democrats!

Oh, and I don't vote a straight ticket, and wouldn't vote for Bauer for Dogcatcher. Anyone who thinks he's a standup guy, in politics to serve the people (as Sanford surely is), should really just Google him. It will be an eye opener.

No, he should not resign!

As far as an emergency occuring while Sanford was away from his office, the last I heard, there was television reception and telephones in Argentina. If a huricane had been approching SC or if an earth quake had occured in our area, Sanford would have heard about it and contacted his office by phone. Just because no one admitted to knowing where he was didn't mean he had abandoned his job.

And, since the State Supreme Court had just told all of us that his job had no authority and he was just a figurehead, what is all the fuss about any way?

When did admitting to an affair actually hurt a mans political asperations? It seems to be expected of the "Good Old Boys" when they are in a position of power. The only time it has hurt the men is when they continued to lie about it after people found out. Sanford didn't lie about it, no one suspected until he brought it out himself. And his wife was the first person he told.

Calm down all you ousters who are "hungry like the wolf"......yes, Gov Sanford made a mistake....who among us hasn't? His is just more open to scrutiny. I watched his hurtful and heartfelt apology....there are some who would not have gone as far he did in telling the public of his unfaithfulness. I think this tells much about Mark Sanford....he truly feels the hurt and disappointment and we owe it to him to support him and give him the opportunity to complete his term...and then let him carry on in the journey of life that he may. We are all God's children....so let me ask the question...."What would God do?"

I, like many others, am shocked at this...but I feel he is a good person....and he is one of God's children too...he just made a mistake.....I will stand behind him.

I posted this on a different thread. this is more on topic.

Mark Sanford should resign because Mark Sanford thinks he should resign:
----
"...As a member of the House of Representatives during the heyday of the Clinton-Lewinsky affair, he was often a harsh critic of the president for his marital misconduct."

This is "very damaging stuff," Sanford declared at one point, when details of Clinton's conduct became known. "I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign)... I come from the business side," he said. "If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone."

Explaining his decision to back impeachment articles against Clinton, he added, "I think what he did in this matter was reprehensible... I feel very comfortable with my vote."
-----
Why should he not hold himself accountable to his own moral standards?
I say if he doesn't resign, he owes Clinton an apology. What a hypocrite.

I don't think he has done anything that would compromise his ability to TRY running our state. Let's get the legislature to resign instead. Then maybe something can be accomplished!!

It would be one thing if he was truly sorry for what he did, but he is not or else he would of stopped before he got caught, the only reason he feels bad now is because he got caught.

Sanford is a hypocrite - Mr. Principles, except when he is affected. Of, course he should resign. The only reason he has support is because people don't like Bauer's ... .

This has nothing to do with issues between him and his wife. It has to do with leaving the state and no one in charge....and add to that...no one knew no one was in charge......In the military he would receive a courts martial and go to jail, in the corporate world he would be fired. Sure he should redign...but like all politicans he will not...he hopefully will be forced out but he will not go willingly....none do....

He should resign because he preached about principles for years, and so we should learn from that and stick to our principles. Yes Bauer sucks, but either way we have a lame duck. So we should stand on the principle that if you abandon your post because of some 14 year old hormonal urges that you cannot control you should lose your job.
