Post and Courier MIE :: Teachers :: Grants
GrantsWe understand that school budgets are tighter than ever and funding is sometimes hard to come by. Because we along with our subscribers and the local business community firmly believe that The Post and Courier is an invaluable educational tool, we offer a grants program for teachers and schools in greatest need.
If you would like to request a partial or full grant to cover the cost of a class set of newspapers, you must first submit a Grant Request Letter. We require that a Grant Request Letter be on file for all teachers who receive newspapers covered by a grant.
To submit a Grant Request Letter, please send a one page letter on your school letterhead stationary explaining your need for a grant, your intended use of the newspapers in your classroom, the day(s) of week you would like delivery and the number of students who will receive the newspapers. Be sure to include any relevant special circumstances such as your school's Title I status, free and reduced-lunch rate, student-parent demographics, etc.
Grant requests should be mailed to:

Research and Teacher Assessment
We know that MIE works, but don't just listen to us!
Measuring Success, a 2003 study sponsored by the Newspaper Association of America, provided hard data for the first time about the impact of NIE on our students. The study focused on 22 newspapers in nine states, observing MIE and standardized test data for the two consecutive years. The results in test scores were amazing:
Elementary 3% better with MIE
Elementary 4% better with MIE
Secondary 9% better with MIE
Our teachers' responses were overwhelming
Was the use of The Post and Courier helpful in reaching S.C. Educational Standards in your classroom?
Yes! (93%)
"I can tie the newspaper articles, ads and classifieds directly to state standards."
"The use of The Post and Courier allows me to tie in specific, real-world examples of the principles outlined in the state standards."
"Any 'real' reading they can do is wonderful. Learning to read for information is so important as they get older. The newspaper offers hundreds of opportunities!"
