Pinewood Prep athlete Malcolm Reed might not have had the biggest numbers, statistically, for the Panthers' basketball and soccer teams. But he always seemed to come up with the big play. "He was the perfect player for our team," Pinewood basketball coach Pat Eidson said.

The awards and honors continue for Bishop England catcher Brison Celek. Celek was named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger High School All-American team. He was the only player from South Carolina to be named All-American or honorable mention by the organization.

Team and personal unbeaten records were of little concern. The entire season possibly was on the brink for Porter-Gaud. The event that had lured J.B. Robards into finally playing high school tennis as a sophomore was up for grabs. He had dropped the first set, and a state championship was no longer a sure thing as cramps attacked his legs and a third-set match tiebreaker was deadlocked at 6-6.

Pinewood Prep soccer standout Malcolm Reed picked up a championship ring in the eighth grade when the Panthers won the SCISA Class AAA state title. At first, he didn't think about it too much, but then he thought about the future.

The National High School Coaches Association named Summerville legend John McKissick as its national football coach of the year for 2009. McKissick, who will turn 83 in late September, is the dean of high school football coaches in the country.

Caitlin Moquin played in the Class AAAA girls state soccer championship in May, and will conclude her career in July when she plays in the Clash of the Carolinas, which features the top senior players from South Carolina versus the top players from North Carolina.

Wando pitcher Drew Cisco has already been credited with a victory in a major league baseball stadium even though he just completed his junior year in high school. He's a member of the Diamond Devils 18-U baseball team that competed in the Perfect Game National Showcase earlier this week in the Hubert Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Caroline Pastre didn't plan on a softball career. Pastre was only 8 years old when her best friend insisted she join her in recreation league softball. "I only played because she wanted me to play," Pastre said. "She wouldn't play without me, so I played in the rec league."

St. John's High School star Greg Roper concluded a fabulous run at the Class A State Track and Field Championships last month, becoming the first athlete in state history to win the 400-meter dash four times in his career.
