While living on our 41-foot sailboat in Key West, Fla., we went to the local SPCA. Being dog lovers, we missed canine companionship. We had owned a boxer, but he got terribly seasick and we felt sorry for him, so we found him a better home with a backyard and an owner who loved him.

Clyde came into my life at a time when I really needed him. My grandson was deploying to Iraq with the Army and I was very anxious and upset about it.

Maggie is a 3-year-old Chow mix adopted from the Charleston Animal Society shelter in March 2008. We fell in love with her on first sight during a visit to the shelter during its grand opening celebration.

Kayla is 5 years old and is half chocolate Lab, half golden retriever. She was one of 11 pups (all black) born to her golden retriever mom. She is a very sweet girl who loves everyone she meets. She will warn us of other animals in the area, too, namely lizards, squirrels and snakes.

Always having owned big male Labrador retrievers (one that I rescued as a young abused dog lived to be 14), I was not prepared for this little delightful baby girl, whom I took on as a "foster child" from the JASPCA, now the Charleston Animal Society, in August 2006.
