Unearned promotions cheat students
When it comes to education, South Carolina continuously finds itself placed at or near the bottom, and yet South Carolina educators are looking to require fewer credits needed for graduation and to eliminate school days. Instead of cutting education, state legislators should focus on what needs to be done to strengthen South Carolina's educational system.

Recently, our nation lost one of its great heroes with the passing of Col. Bob Howard. Bob was a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for actions above and beyond the call of duty during the war in Vietnam. He may have been the most decorated veteran of that war. He will be laid to rest in Arlington Cemetery on Feb. 22, with full military honors.

Back in my college days (1975-79) at the College of Charleston I had the honor and privilege of being employed as an aide by Gen. Mark W. Clark. I lived in a small camper behind the general's house, and my main responsibility was to be home by a certain hour in the evenings in the unlikely event he should have a problem with his heart pacemaker.
